What is Classic Extended?

Classic Extended is a custom retro format built on top of GOAT Format. It uses the same cardpool and core rules as GOAT format while adding a very small selection of archetype related cards to the card pool.

The format is designed for players who enjoy GOAT Format but want more deckbuilding possibilities. Instead of changing the identity of the format, Classic Extended expands it carefully by giving support to lesser played classic archetypes. The goal is not to replace GOAT Format, but to make its metagame wider, more varied, and more alive over time.

Classic Extended currently adds 30 cards to the GOAT Format card pool. These cards are selected to support 10 classic archetypes, with no more than three added cards per archetype. The format does not introduce new mechanics, new generic staples, or cards that can be played in existing top meta decks.

The philosophy of Classic Extended is to make more strategies viable without creating power creep. Traditional GOAT Format decks and 2005 strategies should remain strong even after the inclusion of these new cards. Added cards should encourage new deckbuilding ideas, not replace the existing metagame.

Classic Extended also avoids cards that create unhealthy gameplay patterns. The format is not meant to enable FTK strategies, OTK strategies, hard locks, or overly complex decks. Games should still feel like old school Yu-Gi-Oh!, with interactive turns, resource management, and meaningful decisions.

The format stays within a classic Duel Monsters era identity. Its support is focused on archetypes and themes that feel connected to the manga, the original anime, and the early 2000s era of Yu-Gi-Oh!

One important goal of Classic Extended is compatibility. Classic Extended is designed to stay close enough to regular GOAT Format that Extended decks can exist in the same general environment. Classic extended players play on the same ladder as everyone while regular GOAT players can still choose whether they want to accept those games.

Classic Extended uses the exact same gameplay rules as GOAT Format. The only difference is the additional card pool listed above. Because the format is based on GOAT Format, historical rulings, pre errata card behavior, and 2005 era mechanics are used whenever they differ from modern Yu-Gi-Oh!

If any added card eventually proves to break the philosophy of the format, create unhealthy gameplay, or push the format beyond its intended power level, it may be removed from the Classic Extended card pool after further review.
