Rules

ClassicYGO has two different kinds of rules.

The first part of this page explains the gameplay rules used for GOAT Format. GOAT Format recreates Yu-Gi-Oh! as it was played in 2005, which means some mechanics work differently from the modern game.

The second part explains the rules of ClassicYGO as a platform. These rules cover judge calls, player behavior, penalties, account restrictions, appeals, and how problems should be handled on the site.

ClassicYGO is supported by the GoatWorld community. For judge decisions, dispute resolution, moderation questions, freeze appeals, ban appeals, or any situation where a player believes they were treated unfairly, the GoatWorld Discord server is the official place to contact the judge team. The judges of the GoatWorld server have authority over gameplay rulings and moderation decisions on ClassicYGO.

GOAT Format Rules

GOAT Format is based on the Yu-Gi-Oh! format played during the summer of 2005. It uses the card pool, Forbidden and Limited List, rulings, and gameplay mechanics of that era.

Because Yu-Gi-Oh! has changed significantly over the years, players coming from modern Yu-Gi-Oh! should not assume that every interaction works the same way. Some rules that existed in 2005 were later removed, rewritten, or clarified differently.

Classic Extended uses the same gameplay rules as GOAT Format. The only difference between GOAT Format and Classic Extended is the additional card pool available in Classic Extended.

Core Gameplay Differences

RuleHow it works on ClassicYGO
First turn drawThe player who goes first still draws a card during their first Draw Phase.
Field SpellsOnly one face-up Field Spell can exist on the field at the same time. If a new Field Spell successfully resolves while another Field Spell is already face-up, the previous Field Spell is destroyed.
PriorityAfter a Chain resolves, or after a monster is successfully Summoned, the turn player has the first opportunity to activate an appropriate fast effect or ignition effect before the opponent can respond.
Attack replaysIf the number of monsters on the opponent's field changes during an attack, the attacking player may choose a new attack target, continue the attack if legal, or decide not to attack with that monster at that moment.
Continuous Trap effectsA Continuous Trap with an ignition-like effect cannot use that effect at the exact moment the Trap Card itself is first activated.
Search effectsA player may activate a card or effect that searches the Deck even if the Deck does not currently contain a valid card to add, summon, or reveal.
Damage Step ChainsBefore damage calculation, only one Chain may be created during the relevant Damage Step timing.
Trigger effectsSome trigger effects are allowed to activate according to their historical 2005 behavior, even when modern rules would treat the card's location differently.
Effects that lose their sourceIf a monster effect such as Relinquished targets a monster and the effect's source leaves the field before resolution, the targeted monster remains where it is unless another effect moves it.
Changing battle position after taking controlIf you gain control of an opponent's monster, you may change its battle position even if that monster was Summoned during the same turn.
0 ATK battlesIf a monster with 0 ATK battles another monster with 0 ATK, both monsters are destroyed by battle.
Deck verificationIf a card requires the Deck to be checked or revealed, ClassicYGO does not require the entire Deck to be slowly inspected. Deck verification should remain quick and should not be used as an opportunity to memorize the opponent's Deck.

Historical Card Text and Errata

GOAT Format uses historical card behavior whenever a card has changed since 2005. The following summaries explain how these cards should be treated on ClassicYGO.

These summaries are written for clarity. When a judge is needed, GoatWorld judges may use historical rulings and official 2005 era references to make the final decision.

CardClassicYGO GOAT behavior
Brain ControlYou pay 800 Life Points and take control of one face-up monster your opponent controls until the End Phase.
Catapult TurtleYou may Tribute a monster to inflict damage equal to half of that monster's ATK while it was on the field.
Curse of DarknessWhenever a Spell Card is activated, the player who activated that Spell takes 1000 damage.
Dark Magician of ChaosWhen Summoned, it can recover a Spell Card from the Graveyard. Monsters it destroys by battle are banished, and if it would leave the field while face-up, it is banished instead.
Gearfried the Iron KnightIf an Equip Card becomes equipped to Gearfried, that Equip Card is destroyed.
Hallowed Life BarrierBy discarding one card, damage you would take from your opponent during that turn becomes 0.
Insect ImitationYou Tribute a monster and Special Summon an Insect from the Deck that is exactly one Level higher than the Tributed monster.
Last WillIts effect can only be used once during the turn. After one of your monsters is sent to the Graveyard, you may Special Summon a monster with 1500 or less ATK from the Deck.
Limiter RemovalIt doubles the ATK of your face-up Machine monsters that are affected when it resolves, and those affected monsters are destroyed at the end of the turn.
NecrovalleyGravekeeper's monsters gain 500 ATK and DEF. Cards in the Graveyard cannot be banished, and effects that move cards out of the Graveyard are negated unless they only move themselves.
Night AssailantIts Flip Effect destroys an opponent's monster. If it is sent directly from the hand to the Graveyard, it can return a Flip Effect Monster from your Graveyard to your hand.
RelinquishedOnce per turn, it can equip an opponent's monster to itself. Its ATK and DEF become the equipped monster's ATK and DEF. If it would be destroyed by battle, the equipped monster is destroyed instead, and battle damage is also inflicted to the opponent.
Rescue CatYou may send Rescue Cat from the field to the Graveyard to Special Summon two Level 3 or lower Beast monsters from the Deck. Those monsters are destroyed during the End Phase.
Ring of DestructionIt targets and destroys a face-up monster, then both players take damage equal to that monster's ATK.
SanganIf sent from the field to the Graveyard, it adds a monster with 1500 or less ATK from the Deck to the hand.
Sinister SerpentDuring your Standby Phase, if it is in your Graveyard, you may return it to your hand.
Strike NinjaOnce per turn, during either player's turn, it may banish two DARK monsters from your Graveyard to temporarily banish itself until the End Phase.
Summoner of IllusionsIts Flip Effect Tributes another monster to Special Summon a Fusion Monster from the Fusion Deck. That Fusion Monster is destroyed at the end of the turn.
Witch of the Black ForestIf sent from the field to the Graveyard, it adds a monster with 1500 or less DEF from the Deck to the hand.

If a card is not listed here but has received a modern errata, players should ask a GoatWorld judge when the historical version matters for a duel.

ClassicYGO Site Rules

ClassicYGO is a manual simulator. Players are expected to understand the format, perform their actions honestly, communicate clearly, and keep the duel moving at a reasonable pace.

These rules exist to protect fair play and to give judges a consistent way to handle disputes. They are not meant to punish honest mistakes, but repeated mistakes, abuse, harassment, cheating, or refusal to cooperate may result in penalties.

The examples below are not exhaustive. A judge may apply the closest relevant penalty when a situation is not listed exactly. Repeated violations may lead to stronger penalties than the ones shown. Severe conduct may be punished immediately, even if it is a first offense.

ClassicYGO and the GoatWorld judge team may restrict, freeze, suspend, or ban accounts when necessary to protect the platform and its players. These rules may be updated over time, and players are responsible for staying aware of the current version.

Judge Authority and GoatWorld Discord

GoatWorld judges have authority over gameplay rulings and moderation decisions on ClassicYGO.

If a dispute happens during a duel, players should call a judge and explain the situation clearly. Players should not spam judge calls, insult the opponent, or refuse to continue playing when the issue does not affect the current game state.

If a player believes a ruling, freeze, suspension, ban, or moderation decision was unfair, they should go to the GoatWorld Discord server and follow the appeal process there. Appeals should be respectful and should include useful information such as screenshots, duel logs, usernames, and a clear explanation of what happened.

Harassing judges, repeatedly demanding a different answer, or attempting to pressure the judge team may lead to additional penalties.

Account Responsibility

You are responsible for your account, your connection, and your network.

If another person uses your account to break the rules, the account may still be punished. If your account is shared, compromised, or used to evade a penalty, ClassicYGO may treat the activity as your responsibility unless the judge team decides otherwise.

Players should not share accounts, impersonate other users, or use alternate accounts to avoid restrictions.

Gameplay Infractions

Gameplay infractions are mistakes or actions that affect the duel itself. Some are honest errors. Others may become penalties if they disrupt the game, create an unfair advantage, or prevent the duel from continuing properly.

InfractionDescriptionUsual consequence
Minor Procedural ErrorA small, unintentional gameplay mistake that can be corrected easily by instruction from a judge.In-duel warning
Major Procedural ErrorA significant gameplay mistake that has affected the game too much to be repaired cleanly, or a repeated minor procedural error.Game loss
Minor Slow PlayPlaying unintentionally slowly or taking too long to make ordinary decisions.In-duel warning
Major Slow PlayRemaining unresponsive after a judge prompt, repeatedly delaying the game, or being away for too long during a duel.Game loss or match loss
Pausing Play ImproperlyRefusing to continue playing while waiting for a judge on an issue that does not immediately affect the game state.Warning, upgradeable
InexperienceEntering rated play without understanding basic rules, basic site controls, or essential GOAT Format mechanics.Beginner status or temporary restriction

Procedural Errors

A procedural error is an honest mistake involving game mechanics, card resolution, or required actions.

A minor procedural error is usually something that can be fixed immediately. For example, a player may attempt to Summon while an effect prevents Summons, or both players may forget a mandatory effect that is still easy to trace and resolve.

A major procedural error happens when the mistake cannot be repaired without damaging the integrity of the duel. For example, if a mandatory cost was missed several turns ago and the player gained meaningful advantage from it, the game may no longer be cleanly repairable.

Judges decide whether a game state is repairable, accepted, or too damaged to continue fairly.

Slow Play

Players must play at a reasonable pace. Complex turns are allowed, and players may think through difficult situations, but they cannot delay the game unnecessarily.

Minor slow play may include repeatedly checking public zones without progressing, taking excessive time for simple actions, or going briefly inactive during a recoverable game state.

Major slow play may include ignoring a judge's request to make a play, staying inactive for an extended period, repeatedly delaying after a warning, or using time as a way to frustrate the opponent.

Intentional delay may be treated as cheating rather than slow play.

Pausing Play

Players should not stop playing simply because they want a judge to comment on something unrelated to the immediate game state.

If the current issue does not prevent the duel from continuing, the judge may instruct both players to keep playing. Refusing to continue after that instruction can lead to an upgraded penalty.

If the judge call involves serious misconduct, cheating, harassment, or a situation that may result in a freeze or ban, pausing play may be appropriate.

Inexperience

ClassicYGO expects rated players to know the basic rules of Yu-Gi-Oh!, the basic rules of GOAT Format, and the basic controls of the site.

A player may receive beginner status or a temporary restriction if they repeatedly enter rated games without understanding essential mechanics, rely on incorrect outside explanations after a judge has corrected them, or cannot navigate the duel interface well enough to complete a game properly.

New players are welcome, but they should practice in casual games before entering serious rated play.

Unsporting Conduct

Unsporting conduct includes toxic behavior, bad faith arguments, harassment, cheating, threats, hate speech, and any conduct that makes the platform unsafe or unfair.

InfractionDescriptionUsual consequence
Minor Unsporting ConductRude behavior, insults, baiting, bad faith arguments, or mild toxicity.Warning
Major Unsporting ConductSerious disrespect, refusal to follow a judge instruction, repeated toxicity, or behavior that disrupts the duel.Game loss and warning
Severe Unsporting ConductRepeated major misconduct or extreme disruptive behavior in a short period of time.Temporary freeze
CheatingIntentionally lying about rules, game state, private information, or policy to gain advantage or mislead another person.Temporary freeze or stronger
HarassmentThreats, targeted abuse, sexual harassment, intimidation, or repeated unwanted contact.Temporary freeze, long restriction, or ban
Hate SpeechUse of slurs, hateful symbols, or promotion of hateful ideology.Temporary freeze, with possible ban for repeated conduct
DoxingSharing or trying to obtain personal information about another user without consent.Ban

Minor Unsporting Conduct

Minor unsporting conduct includes behavior that is rude, hostile, or disruptive but not severe enough for an immediate major penalty.

Examples include insulting another player, mocking a judge, repeatedly arguing after an answer has been given, refusing to communicate basic game actions, spamming unnecessary in-game actions, or trying to use policy technicalities in bad faith rather than to keep the duel fair.

A warning may become a stronger penalty if the behavior continues.

Major Unsporting Conduct

Major unsporting conduct includes behavior that seriously disrupts the duel or shows clear disrespect for the opponent, the judge, or the platform.

Examples include refusing to follow a judge's ruling, continuing to argue after being told to proceed, repeatedly insulting another user, or intentionally making the duel environment hostile.

A major unsporting conduct penalty may be upgraded if the player continues the behavior after a judge has intervened.

Severe Unsporting Conduct

Severe unsporting conduct applies when a player repeatedly commits major misconduct in a short period of time, floods the game or chat with abusive messages, or creates an environment that is clearly unacceptable for other users.

This may result in a temporary freeze or a stronger penalty depending on the situation.

Cheating

Cheating is any intentional attempt to gain an unfair advantage through dishonesty.

This includes lying about the game state, lying about rules, hiding public information, intentionally misrepresenting private information when required to answer truthfully, providing false information to a judge, stalling to waste time, or pretending that an illegal action is legal after knowing it is not.

Cheating is treated seriously even if the player does not successfully gain advantage.

Harassment

Harassment includes targeted abuse, threats, intimidation, sexual comments after being told to stop, repeated unwanted contact, or encouraging harm toward another user.

ClassicYGO does not allow players to threaten another person, their family, their property, their account, their connection, or their privacy.

Harassment may lead to a long restriction or permanent ban depending on severity.

Hate Speech

ClassicYGO does not allow slurs, hateful symbols, usernames promoting hate, or speech that attacks people based on protected characteristics.

This includes attempts to slightly alter spelling to bypass filters or moderation.

A first offense may result in a significant freeze. A repeated offense may result in a permanent ban.

Doxing

Doxing is the act of sharing, threatening to share, or trying to obtain another user's personal information without consent.

This includes real names, addresses, IP addresses, private social media, workplace information, school information, or any other identifying information.

Doxing is a ban-level offense.

Communication Systems and Account Rules

ClassicYGO includes public chats, duel chat, private messages, profiles, duel notes, usernames, and other communication tools. These systems must be used in a way that does not harass, deceive, disturb, or spam other users.

InfractionDescriptionUsual consequence
Minor SpamRepeated unwanted messages, excessive caps, meaningless text, or irrelevant links.Warning
Major SpamContinuing to spam after a warning or flooding a chat with unwanted messages.Temporary freeze
Severe SpamExtreme flooding, disturbing repeated content, or intentionally making chat unusable.Longer freeze
Duel Note MisuseUsing duel notes to insult, advertise, harass, or display inappropriate content.Warning, upgradeable
Profile MisuseUsing a profile to target users, display abusive content, or promote inappropriate material.Warning, upgradeable
BoostingUsing alternate accounts, friends, or manipulation to gain illegitimate wins, rating, or experience.Stats reset and permanent beginner status
Inappropriate MaterialSending or linking adult, shocking, malicious, or inappropriate content.Temporary freeze or ban
Fake EvidenceForging screenshots, logs, messages, or other evidence.Ban
HackingAccessing or attempting to access another user's account without permission.Ban
Inappropriate UsernameUsing a username that contains hate speech, targeted harassment, impersonation, or prohibited content.Name change, freeze, or ban

Spam

Spam includes repeatedly posting the same message, filling a chat with nonsense, using excessive caps, posting irrelevant links, or intentionally disrupting conversation.

Minor spam usually receives a warning. Continuing after a warning may result in a freeze. Severe spam that floods the chat or includes disturbing content may receive a stronger penalty immediately.

Duel Notes and Profiles

Duel notes and profiles should not be used to insult players, advertise unrelated content, display disturbing material, or harass specific users.

If a profile or note violates the rules, a judge may require it to be changed. Repeated abuse can lead to a freeze.

Boosting

Boosting means manipulating the system to gain rating, wins, or experience unfairly.

This includes using alternate accounts to play against yourself, arranging fake wins with another person, repeatedly surrendering for illegitimate gain, or abusing matchmaking to farm results.

Boosting may result in a stats reset, permanent beginner status, and additional penalties.

Inappropriate Material

Players may not send or link disturbing, adult, malicious, illegal, or intentionally shocking content through ClassicYGO.

Content that is merely annoying may result in a freeze. Content that is harmful, malicious, illegal, or designed to crash, exploit, or endanger users may result in a permanent ban.

Fake Evidence

Do not forge screenshots, edit logs, fake messages, or provide misleading evidence to a judge.

ClassicYGO relies on reports and appeals to keep the platform fair. Faking evidence is treated as a serious attack on the integrity of the judge system and may result in a permanent ban.

Hacking and Account Access

Logging into another user's account without permission is prohibited.

Deleting decks, changing account information, sending messages, or playing games from another person's account without permission may result in a permanent ban.

Usernames

Usernames may not contain slurs, hateful references, impersonation, threats, targeted harassment, or attempts to bypass moderation filters.

New accounts with prohibited usernames may be banned. Older accounts may be forced to change their username depending on the situation.

Frozen Status, Beginner Status, and Bans

A frozen account cannot duel or use most public communication features. The player may still be able to view limited parts of the site, such as decks or private messages, depending on the restriction.

Beginner status limits a player's access to rated play and is used when a player needs to learn the game, learn the site, or stop entering serious matches before they are ready.

A ban means the account can no longer be used. Ban evasion through alternate accounts may lead to additional accounts being banned.

Some penalty lengths may be increased based on previous strikes. Repeated offenses can multiply or upgrade the consequences. A player with a history of misconduct should expect stronger penalties than a player who makes a first-time mistake.

If you believe your account was frozen, restricted, or banned unfairly, go to the GoatWorld Discord server and follow the appeal process. Appeals should be calm, specific, and supported by evidence when possible.

General Policies

Appeals During a Duel

After a judge gives a ruling, a player may ask whether the decision can be reviewed by a senior GoatWorld judge. The original judge may allow or deny the appeal depending on the situation.

Players should not appeal before the judge has finished asking questions or explaining the decision. Players should also not use appeals as a way to stall, pressure the opponent, or avoid continuing the game.

Reparable, Irreparable, and Accepted Game States

ClassicYGO provides logs and visible information that often make it possible to reconstruct a game state. However, not every mistake should be rewound.

A judge may decide that a game state is reparable if the mistake is clear, recent, and can be corrected without creating unfairness.

A judge may decide that a game state is irreparable if too many actions have happened, private information has changed, or a rewind would create more problems than it solves.

A judge may also decide that a game state has been accepted if both players continued playing after the issue was visible or reasonably knowable.

The judge's role is to preserve the fairest possible duel, not to create a perfect rewind in every situation.

Note Taking and Resources

Players may take notes, check the duel log, and use outside resources such as card databases or ruling references.

However, using notes or resources does not excuse slow play. If a player takes too long to make decisions because they are constantly checking outside information, they may receive a slow play warning.

Coaching and Outside Advice

For normal ladder play, ClassicYGO does not automatically punish players for receiving advice from spectators, friends, or private messages.

However, players remain responsible for their own actions and for maintaining a reasonable pace. If outside advice causes delays, confusion, harassment, or rule abuse, a judge may intervene.

Specific tournaments may use stricter coaching rules. When tournament rules differ from ladder rules, the tournament rules take priority.

Time Limit

ClassicYGO does not use a fixed automatic time limit for every duel or every turn.

Both players are expected to play at a reasonable pace. A long game is allowed. A complex turn is allowed. What is not allowed is unnecessary delay, repeated inactivity, or intentional stalling.

If a player believes their opponent is playing too slowly, they should call a judge instead of arguing in chat.

Reports and Evidence

When reporting a problem, provide clear and relevant evidence.

Useful evidence may include screenshots, duel logs, usernames, timestamps, and a concise explanation of what happened. Do not edit evidence in a misleading way. Do not omit context intentionally. Do not create fake proof.

Reports and appeals should be made through the GoatWorld Discord server when the issue cannot be resolved directly on ClassicYGO.

Final Authority

ClassicYGO rules are enforced by the GoatWorld judge team.

Judges may use the written rules, historical GOAT Format rulings, duel logs, player statements, screenshots, and their own judgment to resolve situations. Not every possible issue can be listed on this page, and judges may act against behavior that clearly harms fair play even if it is not named exactly here.

The purpose of these rules is simple: keep ClassicYGO fair, competitive, respectful, and faithful to the 2005 GOAT Format experience.
